Google has announced that it will discontinue software support for their first and second generation Nest Learning Thermostat on 25th October 2025. The company also confirmed it will not be launching any new Nest thermostats in Europe.
According to the company, the diversity and complexity of European heating systems have made it increasingly difficult to design a universal smart thermostat that integrates well across the region. This isn’t necessarily a surprise given the fourth generation didn’t make it to Europe.

The third generation Nest Thermostat and Nest Thermostat E will continue to be available in Europe only while stock lasts.
Will my Nest Thermostat still work in November 2025?
The short answer is yes. Owners of these early Nest thermostats will still be able to adjust temperatures, set schedules, and use manual functions directly on the devices.
However, they’ll lose access to connected features such as control via the Google Home and Nest apps, remote access. Often the reason for investing in smart home devices.
Google Nest Learning Thermostat Next Steps
To ease the transition for affected customers, Google is offering a substantial discount on the Tado Smart Thermostat X [Ad] in Europe. While this gesture may help some users move on, it’s unlikely to fully satisfy long time Nest users who feel abandoned after investing in Google’s ecosystem.
Cloud Service Questions
This development reignites the smart home product longevity debate. The lifespan of hardware is often tied closely to a company’s willingness to maintain software services.
Perhaps we will see a growing number of paid subscription models? Would that be better in terms of longevity?
Local Matter supported devices may also improve this model with cloud services be catered for via HomeKit or Home Assistant. I just wonder how long my third generation Nest Learning Thermostats have left and if Google will offer a similar discount for customers in Europe at their end of support?
