Smart homes aren’t just about convenience they’re about creating an environment that works around your lifestyle, saves you time, and quietly improves your day-to-day living. After years of experimenting with different setups, there are a handful of smart home devices I now consider everyday essentials.
These are the smart home devices that genuinely make a difference and when paired with the right automations, they become incredibly powerful.

We use Home Assistant to automate the vast majority of our devices. Some devices are easier to manage in their own apps or in Apple Home for full, family access.

Smart Thermostats
A smart thermostat is easily one of the most impactful smart home devices It learns your routines, adjusts heating automatically, and ensures you’re not wasting energy when you’re out.
The real magic comes from automation heating turning on just before you wake up, or switching off when you leave the house. Over time, it not only improves comfort but can also reduce energy bills significantly.
In addition to a central thermostat we have also added smart thermostat valves to some radiators. This offers room by room benefit and control. See: Eve Thermo in Home Assistant.
Thermostat Home Assistant Automations
- Presence based heating that switches to an eco temperature when everyone leaves a zone (Home Assistant).
- Turning off heating when a window is opened.
- Pre-heating your home before your morning alarm on colder days (Uses data from the Ecowitt Weather Station or Eve Weather).

Smart Lights
Smart lighting goes far beyond turning lights on and off with your phone. It’s about creating atmosphere, improving security, and supporting your daily routine.
You can automate lights to gradually brighten in the morning, dim in the evening, or switch on when you enter a room. We have been growing a collection of Phillips Hue lights over the years. See Getting Started with the Hue Bridge Pro.
Current Automations in Apple Home and Home Assistant
- Adaptive lighting based on time of day
- Motion-activated low lighting during the night
- Activating lighting when you’re away (for security)

Smart Vacuums
Smart vacuums are one of those smart home devices that quietly give you time back every single week. Once scheduled, they take care of daily cleaning without any effort. Many models map your home and avoid obstacles, making them far more efficient than traditional vacuuming. We run two SwitchBot vacuums, The SwitchBot S20 and the K11+ see the full SwitchBot S20 Review.
Automations using the SwitchBot App
- Automatically start cleaning when everyone leaves home (You need to remember to leave the doors open).
- Trigger kitchen cleaning overnight at a set time.

Door and Window Sensors
These small, often overlooked smart home devices play a big role in both security and automation. They can instantly alert you if something is opened unexpectedly and can also trigger useful routines throughout your home.
Our Home Assistant Automations
- Send alerts if doors/windows open in away mode
- Night-time checks to ensure everything is closed before bed
- Turn on lights when the front door opens after dark
- Turn off heat if a window is open
- Adjust the dehumidifier if window is open.

Motion, Light, and Temperature Sensors
If there’s one category that truly makes a home feel “smart,” it’s sensors. These allow your home to respond intelligently in real time whether that’s turning on lights, adjusting heating, or reacting to environmental changes.
We use a mix of Aqara and Philips Hue smart home devices, obviously for motion but they also offer light level and temperature. In addition we have Ecowitt sensors working alongside the weather station for accurate humidity measurements.
Automations we use in Home Assistant:
- Automatically turn lights on/off based on motion.
- Turn off lights based on the level of light in the room (great for winter mornings)
- Adjust heating room-by-room using temperature sensors.
- Dim lights or close blinds when sunlight is too strong.
- Adjust the dehumidifier based on humidity level.
- Send a to-do to Todoist to check security cameras if there as been motion during the night.

Smart Plugs
Smart plugs are one of the simplest and most cost-effective smart home devices to make almost any device in your home “smart.” From lamps and coffee machines to chargers and fans, they give you control, scheduling, and energy monitoring without replacing the device itself.
Smart plugs are perfect for adding automation to everyday appliances and reducing wasted energy. We monitor energy use via Home Assistant (see our complete guide to the Home Assistant Energy Dashboard).
Automations we use in Home Assistant
- Cut standby power to devices when they’re not in use, usually at night.
- Turn on your coffee machine as part of your morning routine
- Turn on a TV plug if motion is triggered at meal times.
- Turn off specific plugs when someone leaves a zone.

Conclusion
The best smart home systems aren’t the flashiest they’re the ones that quietly remove friction from your life. When combined with thoughtful automations, these systems work together to create a home that’s comfortable, efficient, and responsive.
Once everything is set up, your home starts running in the background handling the small things so you don’t have to. And that’s when a smart home really starts to feel worth it.
